Rogers' Hometown Hockey in Haliburton
I had the rare weekend off, and I found out that the Rogers Hometown Hockey was in the big metropolis known as Haliburton, Ontario. Bernie Nicholls, Cody Hodgson, and Ron Stackhouse were there. So I grabbed some singles (in Stackhouse's case, I had to go to a card store because I had nothing for him) and a puck to get signed. My Aunt lives there so I took the drive up to spend the weekend with her. It was also an excuse to do some scenic highway driving. The leaves were gorgeous. If you're ever in rural Eastern Ontario during the Fall, I highly recommend taking a drive in Cottage Country along Highways 41, 28, 35, and/or 118. It's quite a beautiful drive.
Any way, I walked down to the event (which was a 15 minute walk from my Aunt's house, thus saving me the migraine from having to find a parking spot in such a small town). The first day I went I got Cody Hodgson to sign 3 cards for me in blue (which he didn't seem too pleased about) and took a picture with him as well. Ron Stackhouse was signing in the Scotiabank tent and got him to sign my cards and took a picture with him as well. He seemed surprised that had cards of him since he hadn't played since the mid-1980s.
The next day I went as well. I got Cody Hodgson to sign my two other cards. I went to the Scotiabank tent to meet Bernie Nicholls. His family knew my Aunt when he was younger. He was actually my first hockey autograph ever! I was supposed to meet him at my Uncle's cottage when I was a kid, but I wasn't able to make it that year. He signed a post card he had, featuring him in a Devils uniform. His Dad apparently gave him crap for not finding something else! Well, his Dad was always tough on him apparently!
The line up was small because it was starting to rain. He was happy to sign everything I had. I told him about my Aunt and Uncle and he seemed to remember. I also told him about the post card he signed for me and he started laughing. We also talked about the town's history, the area and some hockey. Then I went back to my Aunt's since it was starting to rain, and I went home. I didn't want to stick around until 6:30 to see Ron MacLean and Tara Sloan due to the crappy weather and long drive back.
Overall, it was a good weekend. A lot of people came up from neighbouring communities, such as Bancroft, Huntsville, and Bracebridge, so it was well attended. Despite the fact it was pssing rain on Sunday, and most of the way home, I had a good time.
