1992 Expansion Draft Revisited

On June 18 1992, the NHL held an expansion draft for their two newest franchises, the Ottawa Senators and Tampa Bay Lightning.  The rules for expansion were more lax back then so 21 of the 22 teams (the Sharks were exempted having come into the league the previous season) were allowed to protect 2 goaltenders and 14 skaters.  This allowed such potential franchise players such as Wendell Young, Brad Shaw, Sylvain Turgeon and others to be available as building blocks for the two franchises.  Here are the selections they made:

Not the greatest line-ups, eh?  I always wondered, what if the expansion draft was like the one for Vegas?  What kind of players would be available?  Well, wonder no more!  I used the same rules (1 Goalie, 3 Defensemen, 7 Forwards or 1 Goalie and 8 skaters).  Also, teams were only allowed to pick once from each team, meaning both Tampa and Ottawa had to pick one player from each team.  Ottawa would once again pick first, then Tampa would get the next 2 picks, then Ottawa would pick twice, and so on.

I did this totally from memory and available lists so there are more than likely a few errors.  Unlike Mel Bridgeman, I can't blame my laptop.  Also, I didn't workout any side deals or anything either to keep it somewhat simple.

1992-1993 OTTAWA SENATORS

Craig Billington (G)  New Jersey Devils
John Vanbiesbrouck (G)  New York Rangers

Brian Benning (D)  Philadelphia Flyers
Doug Crossman (D)  Quebec Nordiques
Gerald Diduck (D)   Vancouver Canucks
Igor Kravchuk (D) Chicago Blackhawks
Norm Maciver (D)  Edmonton Oilers
Mario Marois (D)   Winnipeg Jets
Stephane Quintal (D)   St. Louis Blues

Brent Ashton (F)  Boston Bruins
James Black (F) Hartford Whalers
Todd Elik (F)  Minnesota North Stars
Bob Errey (F)  Pittsburgh Penguins
Tom Fitzgerald (F)  New York Islanders
Mike Keane (F)  Montreal Canadiens
Mike Krushelnyski (F) Toronto Maple Leafs
Bob Kudelski (F)  Los Angeles Kings
Kelly Miller (F)  Washington Capitals
Bob Probert (F)  Detroit Red Wings
Paul Ranheim (F)  Calgary Flames
Randy Wood (F)  Buffalo Sabres

Now I think this team would've won more than 10 games.  Or at least more than one road game anyway.

1992-93 TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING

Dominik Hasek (G) Chicago Blackhawks
Ken Wregget (G) Pittsburgh Penguins

Slava Fetisov (D) New Jersey Devils
Charlie Huddy (D) Los Angeles Kings
Randy Ladoucer (D) Hartford Whalers
Gord Murphy (D) Boston Bruins
Lyle Odelein (D) Montreal Canadiens
Michel Petit (D) Calgary Flames
Joe Reekie (D) New York Islanders

Brian Bradley (F) Toronto Maple Leafs
Randy Burridge (F) Washington Capitals
Mike Craig (F) Minnesota North Stars
Gerard Gallant (F) Detroit Red Wings
Steve Kasper (F) Philadelphia Flyers
Scott Mellanby (F) Edmonton Oilers
Sergio Momesso (F) Vancouver Canucks
Troy Murray (F) Winnipeg Jets
John Ogrodnick (F) New York Rangers
Greg Paslawski (F) Quebec Nordiques
Wayne Presley (F) Buffalo Sabres
Rich Sutter (F) St. Louis Blues

I think these teams would've been put on a better path.  Or at the very least provide some decent return if they make trades.
